Where to Worship

One of the great things about the city of York is that it has a huge variety of churches to choose from.  This can also pose a challenge though, when it comes to navigating your way round them all! Below is a small selection, which tries to encompass the wide range of styles on offer. There are also links to two Church Finder tools to help you find your nearest Anglican or Methodist church.

Heslington Church

Heslington Church, or Hes, is an ecumenical partnership between the Church of England and the Methodist Church. The church has a Church of England vicar and a Methodist minister, who share all services. The services are informal and are supported by both organ and a worship group. Take a look at their website here.

York Minster

York Minster is the Cathedral in the city centre, and the seat of the Archbishop of York.  Worship at the Minster is very varied, and it often plays host to a variety of special events and services for special occasions. Take a look at what's on (and at their daily services) here.

All Saints Pavement

All Saints is a beautiful church with a small, friendly congregation of mostly older people. The services are in a traditional style, using the Book of Common Prayer, and supported by a choir and organ. All Saints is the guild and civic church of York, which means there are lots of special services held throughout the year.

Distance from Campus: 15-20 minute walk (High Ousegate)

Sunday Services: 10:30am and 6:30pm

St Michael Le Belfrey

St Mike’s is a church with a large student congregation. The church has a strong focus on evangelism and community work within the north of England. The 9am service is small and meditative, with a mixture of traditional and world music, while the 7pm worship service is energetic and informal, accompanied by a contemporary music group.

Distance from Campus: 30 minute walk (next to Minster)

Sunday Services: 9am and 7pm

Worship is normally traditional in style and includes prayer and hymns accompanied by a stunning organ.

Distance from Campus: 20 minute walk (St Saviourgate)

Sunday Services: 10:30am and 6:30pm
